USA, Life Saving Benevolent Association of New York, Incorporated 29th March 1849, a 20ct gold medal by CH Lovett for Tiffany & Co., awarded 1911, lifeboats set to sea in a storm as a ship flounders, rev. engraved Presented to Alfred N Beavan Master of the Steamship “Brika” in recognition of his humanity and seamanship in rescuing three men from the waterlogged and sinking Sloop “Theresa” in a heavy sea 120 miles off St Michaels July 20, 1911”, 52mm, wt. 64g. Good extremely fine, rare. The three mariners of the Theresa had put to sea from Providence to fish off the west coast of Africa on 14th June. A storm had almost sunk the vessel when they were rescued off the Azores. The medal is sold with copies of a contemporary account from the New York Times. The Brika herself was torpedoed and sunk on 13th March 1917 by U-47.
