A Victorian 18ct gold, red and white paste memorial ring with central square cut red paste and old cut white paste border leading to tapered shoulders with black enamel Maltese cross decoration, and 'Remembrance' engraved to back of shank. Hallmarked Chester 1885. Engraved inside with 'Writ by a friend and with his blood, James Galbraith Lieut Col Com 66 Reg, obt 27 July 1880.' "Lieutenant-Colonel James Galbraith was killed in the Battle of Maiwand in Afghanistan on 27th July 1880. Fifth son of Samuel and Susannah, of Co. Tyrone. After Sandhurst he was gazetted in 1851 with the 66th Foot and served in Canada and East India. He commanded the 66th at Girishk in 1880 and died at Maiwand, he was seen kneeling with a Colour in one hand rallying the men for a last stand." www.redcoat.info/afghinf.htm
