Falling for Autumn Jewels

As late summer changes to early autumn, you may feel as though your jewellery collection should reflect this change in season as warm, earthy colours become visible around us. From warm and hazy gemstones such as Cat’s Eye chrysoberyl to sumptuous gold leaf and berry pieces, Fellows has autumn jewellery covered with a beautiful selection featuring in our upcoming auction of Antique & Modern Jewellery on Thursday 12th September.

Classic autumn imagery features heavily in the sale. Pieces such as lot 479 and 377 are wonderful examples of gold foliate leaves finished with warm ruby gemstones, and make the ultimate autumn accessory. Early autumn is a time of wild fruits aplenty, as the Anglo-Saxons knew well (harvest comes from the Anglo-saxon haerfest meaning early autumn). The garnets in Lot 495 are reminiscent of autumn hawthorns or perhaps elderberries, and would make a wonderful addition to any jewellery collection.

There is also a varied selection of gold leaf, sprig and bouquet brooches in the sale featured in lots 187, 299 and 560, though a particular favourite is lot 169. Beautifully detailed, this hand-painted enamel and diamond flower brooch is both elegant and quirky, with a wonderful autumn palette.

Chrysoberyl is a particularly beautiful gemstone for the season – its colours can vary range from yellow, through to green and brown, perfectly reflecting the changing seasons. We have a beautiful example of Cat’s Eye chrysoberyl in lot 30 with an estimate of £800 - £1,200.

If you’re just looking to invest in a few minimalist pieces for your late autumn wardrobe, lots 40 and 102 will do just the job. While rope detailing is very à la mode, it is the brilliant lustrous yellow that catches the eye – the perfect accessory to any outfit.
