Auction Report: An auction of Antique & Modern Jewellery

With over 400 buyers registered to bid online, along with busy saleroom and 200 telephone bids, August's auction of Antique & Modern Jewellery was always set to impress. The auction featured a great selection of period pieces as well as modern designer jewellery that saw many items fetching well above their estimates.

The designer section of the auction was exceptionally popular, especially the Cartier pieces with a stunning 18k gold multi-strand necklace, designed as ten strands of fancy-link chain selling for an impressive £3,900 after an estimate of £2,500 - £3,000. Also featured, an iconic Panthere de Cartier ring with onyx and tsavorite achieving a hammer price of £1,300 after an estimate of £500 - £700. Other Cartier pieces also achieved impressive results with an 18ct gold diamond band ring selling for £2,300 and a pearl and diamond pendant which sold for almost double its estimate at £1,300.

Several pieces from Bulgari’s informal and elegant B.Zero1 collection also sold particularly well, with an 18ct gold pavé-set diamond ring selling for over double its estimate at £1,700. The more minimalist pieces in the collection also sold well, including three rings with the trademark Bulgari central spiral and lateral rims; matching earrings from the collection sold for £480.

Tiffany & Co. pieces usually achieve impressive hammer prices in this auction. Small and simple pieces sold particuarly well including a pair of interlinked hoops for £280, as did a ‘Teardrop’ pendant by Elsa Peretti, selling for triple its estimate at £1,250.

Finishing the sale off nicely, one of the last lots in the designer section stood out amongst the others. A Van Cleef & Arpels diamond ‘Frivole’ ring is as beautiful as it is luxurious - featured in the sale for £500 - £700, though a few enthusiastic buyers pushed up the final hammer price to £3,200.

Fellows next Auction of Antique & Modern Jewellery is on Thursday 12th September and will feature a over 400 lots, including dazzling period pieces and innovative contemporary styles.
