Rubies: King of Gems...

Diamonds may be a girl's best friend but rubies were considered by the ancients to be "the king of gems" which symbolised eternal love.

Not only is ruby the birthstone for July, the vivid gem stone is also the traditional gift given to those celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.

According to legend, rubies were a talisman that warned its owner against danger and in some ancient cultures they used to grind them down into a powder,
which would then be placed on the tongue for medicinal purposes.

Here is a selection of beautiful ruby pieces from our upcoming auction of Antique & Modern Jewellery taking place on Thursday 19th July.
