ROLEX - a gentleman's stainless steel Oyster Perpetual Submariner bracelet watch.

Description

Condition Report

ROLEX - a gentleman's Oyster Perpetual Submariner bracelet watch. Circa 1968. Stainless steel case with calibrated bezel. Reference 5513, serial 1747171. Signed automatic calibre 1530. Black dial with luminous hour markers, outer minute track. Fitted to a signed stainless steel Oyster bracelet with Oysterclasp. 39mm. This is the watch worn by Timothy Dalton's stunt double in the sixteenth James Bond film Licence to Kill. Filming was taking place in Mexico in two locations; Timothy Dalton was in one location with the Rolex 16610 which can be seen throughout the film, whilst the stunt doubles were in a second location filming the famous tanker scene. In this second location Bond's stunt double was given this watch to wear, a Rolex 5513. It has been argued that this notorious tanker scene is one of the most heart-pounding stunts ever committed to the James Bond film franchise. Four petrol tankers are involved in a high speed car chase which proved to be so dramatic that the watch worn by Timothy Dalton's stunt double during filming was very badly damaged. Rolex carried out the repair work free of charge, the receipt of which is included in this lot. Licence to Kill was released in 1989 and it was the final time that 007 wore a Rolex. In 1995 the switch to Omega had been made and this agreement with the franchise still seems to be strong today.
