18th Century Buddha is a Saleroom Success

Following the momentous sale of the Jack Hood Lonsdale belt at £36,000, Fellows secured another selling success within seven days - as a Chinese porcelain figure of Buddha sold for £19,000 at their most recent sale of Furniture, Ceramics, Clocks, Paintings and Collectibles.

The figure, probably dating from the Qianlong period (1736-1795), drew applause from a packed saleroom as it sold for £19,000 on the hammer. The bidding rose rapidly as a bidder in the room and a specialist Oriental dealer on the telephone battled to secure the figure, the former finally securing it after a tense contest.

The price compares very favourably with figures of the same type sold by international auction houses in specialist sales, and demonstrates the ability of Fellows to successfully market high quality antiques to a national and international audience thanks to their investment in the latest technology.

The next auction of this type, to be held in late November, already looks exciting as it contains a large oil on canvas by the celebrated artist Robert Lenkiewicz, estimated at £15,000-20,000.
