Late Arrival - Gold Clutch Bag

A late but welcome entry to our upcoming Antique & Modern Jewellery sale is an unusual gold and diamond clutch bag.

Intricately woven in sumptuous 18ct gold, and with a diamond set clasp opening to reveal a perfectly sized mirror, it is an exquisite blend of style and practicality, evoking the Hollywood glamour of the 1960s and the decades beyond.

The economic prosperity that followed World War II meant a rise in consumerism and the resurgence in Haute Couture, driving the demand for luxury fashion and jewellery. This was a marked departure from the austerity and ‘make do and mend’ mentality of the war years. Precious metals and gemstones were becoming accessible once more and the incorporation of textured gold in jewellery and accessories by iconic French jewellery houses became a dominant theme in the world of fashion throughout the 1950s.

The type of bejewelled gold purses and handbags produced during this time by the likes of Van Cleef & Arpels and Boucheron were truly opulent, harnessing only the finest craftsmanship and materials. Made famous by the likes of Jackie Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor, such practical yet spectacular handbags were to become the ultimate status symbols in society.

The bag features in our auction of Antique & Modern Jewellery on Thursday 19th July.
