Full Lot Description
A Victorian Scottish silver wine jug, with Bacchus pouring spout, the compressed baluster form having foliate scrolled embossing enclosing twin opposed monogram and presentation engraving, above frilled and foliate band to lower body, the hinged lid with foliate dome and finial and scrolled thumb-piece, having shaped rim with scrolled and cross-hatched decoration. Hallmarked James McKay, Edinburgh 1848. Height 25cm, gross weight 35ozt (1087.2g).

'PRESENTED TO ROBERT MACARTNEY GORDON ESQ OF RATTRA BY THE PROCURATORS OF THE STEWARD COURT OF KIRKCUDBRIGHT IN TESTIMONY OF THEIR SENSE OF THE VERY OBLIGING COUTEOUS & ABLE MANNER IN WHICH HE PERFORMED THE DUTIES OF THE OFFICE OF STEWARD CLERK DEPUTIE FOR A PERIOD OF TWENTY YEARS 5th NOVEMBER 1849',

Condition Report
- Item is in fair condition, in consideration of age and use, and shows general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing.
- Silver is mostly bright and shiny, with some dark patches of tarnishing and recesses of polish residue, especially to recesses of decoration.
- Embossing shows some nicks and dints to highest points.
- There is a notable bash to an area of scrolled embossing, below hallmarks and to the left of monogram engraving.
- Area surrounding monogram engraving shows a few, asymmetric bashes. There is also a bash to the right of monogram, below the embossed border.
- Plain area, between embossed scrolling and decoration to lower body, is bumpy and textured to some areas, evident on close inspection.
- Hinged lid is slightly wobbly, but lifts and sits well on rim.
- Item wobbles on flat surface.
- There is a split repair evident to base.
- Edge of base is bumpy and uneven to some areas.
