Fellow’s upcoming
Antiques, Silver & Collectables auction on the 4
th March features an array of pieces in the ever sought after Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco styles. A Liberty & Co Cymric silver part tea service,
Lot 154, with distinctive planished finish, wicker handles and flower bud finials embody the hand crafted aesthetic and turn towards organic plant forms adopted by many designers across Europe during the period.
The sale also features pieces from Liberty’s other distinctive range, Tudric.
Lot 598, a Solkets pewter three piece tea set, and
Lot 600, a pewter biscuit box and cover, by Liberty’s primary designer Archibald Knox further illustrate the focus on naturalistic elements in their featuring of stylized floral motifs. Whilst Knox’s penchant for Celtic ornament is visible in
Lot 828, a Liberty & Co Tudric mantel clock with curved top and Celtic band decoration.

Art Nouveau elements such as these, along with a clear Arts and Crafts influence can also been seen in the work of Ramsden & Carr, in
Lot 170, a pair of silver mounted clothes brushes, and in particular
Lot 309, two early 20
th century cigarette cases, with their characteristic planished finished, and embossed decoration of blossoming flowers upon a scrolling thorn vine, and intertwined oak tree branches with leaves and acorns.
In addition to attention to naturalistic forms, women featured as a major subject for many Art Nouveau artists, and a varied private bronze collection features several examples modelled as female figures with flowing robes and nymph like qualities. The collection also contains Art Deco style figures, modelled in assertive and dance like poses, these are complimented by other Art Deco pieces, including
Lot 426 and
427, two Clarice Cliff Fantasque bowls, with their bold colours and confident geometric designs, and
Lot 374, a Lalique frosted glass Martinets flying swallows vase.
Amongst these beautiful examples the sale also contains names such as Ruskin, Moorcroft, Shelley, and WMF; along with many other decorative pieces clearly inspired by Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
