History of Tourmaline

Tourmaline is one of the most diverse gemstones, renowned for its vast colour range. Its name is derived from the Sinhalese word "turmali," which means "mixed colours." This aptly describes the gemstone, which can be found in almost every hue imaginable - from striking pinks and reds to vibrant greens and blues. In fact, it is common for a single tourmaline stone to display multiple colours, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.

Tourmaline is sourced from a variety of locations across the world, with significant deposits found in Brazil, Afghanistan, and the United States. It was first discovered in Sri Lanka centuries ago and has since become a highly sought-after gemstone for jewellery makers and collectors alike. The gem’s varied composition, rich history, and symbolism have solidified its place as a favourite in the world of fine jewellery.

Types of Tourmaline

Rubellite: A vibrant red or pink variety, often mistaken for ruby.

Paraíba: One of the rarest and most valuable forms, showcasing stunning neon blues and greens.

Indicolite: A captivating deep blue variety.

Watermelon: With a unique blend of pink, green, and sometimes white, this variety mimics the appearance of a watermelon.

Chrome: A vivid green variety, highly prized for its intense colour.

Like opal, tourmaline has its own set of symbolic meanings. Known as a stone of reconciliation, it is believed to encourage compassion, understanding, and emotional healing. Many also regard tourmaline as a protector against negative energy, offering balance and strength to those who wear it.
