George Jensen: The Man and The Company Georg Jensen (1866 – 1935) was a Danish silversmith whose eponymous design business is one of the most popular in the world. His craftsmanship and forward-thinking designs have stood the test of time and are enduringly popular over 120 years after he first started his business. After he completed a goldsmithing apprenticeship, he studied at the Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the 1890s. From there he tried his hand at sculpture and other art forms. He ultimately landed on applied arts and opened his own workshop in 1904. Due to his hands-on training, as well as his background in fine arts, his designs became more and more popular during these early years. Many of his original designs have key characteristics and influences of the Art Nouveau style which he became known for. His designs continued to evolve with the fashion of the times. The company often collaborated with artists such as Sigvard Bernadotte, Henning Koppel, Søren Georg Jensen, Magnus Stephensen, and Nanna Ditzel. Despite this continued invigoration of designs, the company has maintained its style ethos and high-quality workmanship. Over the following years, the company expanded across Europe and the wider world. It faced difficult times following both World Wars due to scarcity of materials and economic downturns. However, the brand has grown and flourished. Georg Jensen is still a stylish choice for many looking to buy jewellery, homewares, and gifts today. You can pick up modern pieces at their own stores, as well as concessions within large department stores such as John Lewis and jewellers such as Mappin & Webb. Georg Jensen at Auction When you buy Jensen pieces at auction, you can pick up period designs which are no longer available. Or, if you are looking at contemporary pieces, you can find them at a fraction of the cost compared to buying them new. Due to the fact that Jensen produces items in a variety of materials, you can find their pieces across a few of our different auctions. They predominantly show up in our Silver and Antiques auctions.
