This pair of impressive Cantonese porcelain vases was produced in the city of Jingdezhen in China. Jingdezhen is renowned for its high-quality porcelain and glazes with production that dates back more than 1700 years.
These vases were produced around the middle part of the 19th century and are unusually large in size, standing at 129.5cm tall. Each vase has a white glazed decoration, profusely adorned with flowers, bats, dragons, and flaming pearls.
We can see more hand-painted details, one, in particular, shows a section or slice of jade. Chinese artists would take pieces of jade and work them into thin slices. Once they were suspended from a cord, one could strike them, forming a note or tone.

The vases also have painted panels, these four panels depict interior scenes with figures dressed in traditional costumes and battle scenes with figures mounted upon horseback and warriors engaged in combat.
Each vase has twin gilt handles, shaped like dragons. These are moulded flat and only detailed with pierced decoration. These flat, pierced handles give an indication of the vases' age. These flat handles were synonymous with other similar porcelain produced at the same time during the 19th century. They have also appeared on the BBC’s The Antiques Roadshow where David Battie spoke about them, you can watch the clip here.
