All

Lot 338 in Fellows’ upcoming Antique & Modern Jewellery sale which takes place on Thursday 15 March features an 18ct gold and enamel First World War Belgian medallion.

First World War Belgian medallion

An 18ct gold and enamel First World War Belgian medallion. Estimate: £600 – £800

The beautiful medallion depicts Albert 1st and Elisabeth of Bavaria, within a red enamel and scrolling ribbon. The item also features a black enamel shield with a crown surround. Furthermore, the reverse contains the raised script.  The length of the medallion is 5.6cms and it weighs 17.8gms. The fascinating item overall is in good condition.

The script on the medallion reads:  L’union fait la force (French) eendracht maakt macht (Dutch). This is the bilingual motto below the Belgian coat of arms meaning ‘Strenght is our unity.’ Furthermore, the script also reads: Belges souvenez-vous de l’héroisme de vos soldats 1914-1915. ‘Belgians, remember the heroism of your soldiers 1914-1915’ (The ‘1915’ is particularly interesting as Belgium was occupied by the German forces from 1914 until 1918). The intriguing item is also stamped: Mauquoy – Individually produced and custom-made awards, medals, nameplates.

King Albert I of Belgium was referred to as ‘the King-Soldier’ and Queen Elisabeth as the ‘Mother of Soldiers’. This particular medallion is not included in the official First World War Decorations of Honour and Mauquoy produced both official medallions as well as unofficial medals for associations.

This is a fascinating piece of history which is sure to be popular under the hammer during our upcoming sale. The Antique & Modern Jewellery catalogue is now available to view online and in person at the following times:
