From as early as the 1770s there are records of a young Charles Robertson exhibiting with hairwork and miniatures. He went on to become well known in Dublin and exhibited at the Royal Academy in London.
Roberston’s paitings are unsigned and he is often confused with other painters of his time because of this,, such as Richard Cosway. He is known for his light blue and grey tones in his miniatures. His portraits of women are considered his most notable works and he is one of the most highly regarded Irish portrait miniaturists. He taught his daughter, Clementina and two of her portraits are exhibited at the National Gallery of Ireland.
