Balenciaga is a well-known luxury fashion house producing high-quality handbags, footwear and accessories. The brand has become extremely popular due to its unique, eye-catching, innovative designs.   History of Balenciaga Balenciaga was founded by Cristóbal Balenciaga, who started his career at a young age following his passion for creating. Cristóbal was born in 1895 in Getaria, a small fishing village in northern Spain. At the age of 11 his mother, a seamstress, introduced him to the world of sewing. Cristóbal then went on to have professional training as well as an apprenticeship at a local tailor.  In 1918 Christóbal took his biggest step yet, towards the future of what was in the pipeline for Balenciaga. He opened his first boutique in Spain, soon followed by two further boutiques in Barcelona and Madrid. Due to the Spanish Civil War, these boutiques had to close, but it didn’t stop Christóbal from chasing his dreams. He moved to Paris in 1937 to carry on designing with people travelling across seas to see his work. Chrisóbal was a very private man, refusing to talk to the press or give statements about his personal life. The one exception throughout his 50-year career was one interview he attended in 1971 for The Times.   Balenciaga Triple S Trainers The triple S trainers were first shown at Balenciaga’s Autumn Winter 2017 Paris Show. Demna Gvasalia (Balenciaga’s Creative director since 2015) hit the trainer world by storm, going viral across all social media platforms and receiving instant love from the public and celebrities who excitedly began styling them not long after. Currently selling for as much as £1,685 on Balenciaga’s website, the price reflects the popularity and quality of the shoes.  Gvasalia designed the shoes to have three soles (which is what the S in Triple S stands for), supposedly stacking three different soles from three different purpose sports trainers all together into one. Following the idea of having a hybrid shoe, Gvasalia included other unique features into the design to compliment this for example, the laces are intended to mimic ones of a hiking boot. This combination gives the shoe a distinct silhouette, making it stand out in the crowd of chunky trainers.  There is endless potential when styling these trainers. The variety of colours and patterns means there really is a perfect pair for everyone. From someone who loves a sleek look, choosing a block colour pair or maybe someone choosing a bold, yet fashionable pattern to express themselves perfectly. The embroidered Balenciaga branding and the sizing seen on the end of the toes are some of the Triple S trainers’ unique selling points, making the shoes easily recognisable in the fashion world. Various celebrities have been seen styling these trainers in public, including Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber and Marc Jacobs. Whether they’re going ‘out out’ or at the airport in a comfortable fit, they always look presentable and stylish in their Triple S’s.  Balenciaga at Auction Lot 1 Balenciaga – Everyday open tote. Fellows’ record-breaking handbags auction on Thursday the 20th of February, saw house records broke by achieving their highest number of registered bidders yet during their Handbags, Jewellery & Accessories auction. Fellows had 1,130 people registered to bid across multiple bidding platforms. This is the highest number of registrations for a Handbags & Accessories auction hosted by Fellows, as well as the highest number of registrations that they have seen in the past three years. Just a few months ago, Fellows appointed Nicola Whittaker as Head of Handbags, and Patricia Preuschoff as Catalogue Manager. Under their direction, the department has continued to grow, and this record-breaking auction is demonstrative of their success. What The Experts Said Nicola Whittaker, Head of Handbags, said: “It’s wonderful that this auction attracted such a high number of bidders. The Handbags & Accessories department is still in its infancy compared to our other specialist departments so it’s wonderful to be part of its growing success. We have expanded the scheduled auctions to six this year and hope to see the increased interest continue. Consignments for April are open, and we know that sellers will be keen to add items to what is already shaping up to be an exciting Spring auction.”. The collection of lots was one of the best ones we have seen so far, and I am delighted that so many of our clients seem to agree. Having over 1,000 bidders was truly exciting, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the bidding unfold. Cementing its place as one of fashion’s most enduring and iconic designs is the Louis Vuitton trunk. Instantly recognisable and eternally chic, the meticulously designed trunks boast exquisite craftsmanship on every front. Every evolutionary form of its structure, hardware, leather, and eventual monogram continues to induce awe in the most stylish of fashionistas. But how did one design revolutionise travel bags forever? The History A modestly aged 16-year-old Louis Vuitton travelled to Paris in 1837 to start his career as a trunk maker. He honed his skills for 17 years before establishing his self-named brand in 1854. Located on rue neuve des Capucines in the 1st Arrondissement, Paris, Vuitton’s traditional environment was one of fashionable Parisian elites. A humble (in relation to the fashion giant today) sign hung outside his shop that read ‘Securely packs the most fragile objects. Specialising in packing fashions.’ The great seismic waves this single shop emitted in the world of luxury design stem from the simple shape of his trunks. The rectangular canvas completely subverted the traditional rounded-top leather trunks available on the market. As leather is not waterproof, the standard designs needed to be domed to allow water to trickle off; however, such shapes made stacking practically impossible. Vuitton’s response to this – a waterproof coated canvas fabric and a flat-top design, very similar to today’s luggage. Not stopping there, Vuitton and his son, Georges, in 1886 added a single lock system with two spring buckles. For such innovation, Georges was awarded a patent on a seemingly simple contraption that continues to hallmark such trunks. After the death of Louis Vuitton, Georges took over the company – building upon the foundations laid out by his late father and exerting its reputation beyond the confines of Paris. The success, however, resulted in numerous imitations and counterfeits by their competitors. Having enough of cheap forgery and spurious imitations, Georges, in his typical inventive way, introduced the famous Louis Vuitton monogram, making his works much harder to copy. The Present Louis Vuitton Trunk Today, Louis Vuitton consistently celebrates its position as one of the most luxurious brands in the world – taking the top spot in the rankings for six consecutive years from 2006-2012. Not just a trunk manufacturer, the brand now sells luxury bags, shoes, perfumes, watches, jewellery, accessories, sunglasses, and even books. Their standalone boutiques, high-end outlets operate in 50 countries with more than 460 stores worldwide, in addition to their website. Collaborating with numerous creatives including Marc Jacobs, Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, and even Kanye West. The brand is committed to sustainability, enacting their 2020 pledge titled ‘Our Committed Journey,’ which establishes ambitious and quantified objectives to be reached by 2025-2030, such as reducing their direct carbon footprint by 55% – already achieving 12% of this from 2018. The Hermès Kelly bag, a staple for the iconic Hermès brand for almost a century, retains its long-standing reputation as a must-have bag for the fashion-conscious. History of the Hermès Kelly The Kelly design is an evolution of Hermès’ first bag, the Haut à Courroies. Originally designed to carry the saddles Hermès were known for, this bag has become the template for many of the house’s iconic designs but would now be recognised as the Birkin HAC. This original bag, the Kelly was named after the actress and princess Grace Kelly who had used a Sac à Dépêches to cover her pregnancy from the press. Many famous names were seen wearing the Sac à Depêches from the 1930s onwards. However, its popularity can be largely accredited to its appearance on the arm of a superstar from Hollywood’s golden era – actress Grace Kelly. Grace Kelly Kelly starred in the 1955 Alfred Hitchcock-directed film, ‘To Catch a Thief’. She wore the Hermès bag as part of her on-screen wardrobe; she then adopted it into her off-screen style. Most notably, Grace Kelly would carry the bag to shield herself during her first pregnancy. A photograph of her in this act became the cover image of Life magazine in 1956. This prompted the nicknaming of the Sac à Depêches the “Kelly” bag.  Due to the prevailing association of the designer piece with the actress who popularised it, Hermès renamed the Sac à Depêches to the Kelly in 1977. The Kelly bag remains iconic today. Grace Kelly’s original Kelly bag was the centrepiece of the 2010 exhibition ‘Grace Kelly: Style Icon’, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The Style of the Kelly Bag All Kellys are trapeze-shaped, structured bags with a top handle and detachable shoulder strap. They come in varying sizes from 15 to 50 (the size is the measurement of the length of the bag, at the base, in centimetres). The Kelly design has lent its iconic style to a whole collection of items. From leather goods such as wallets and belts to rings. Lot 636 Hermès – Kelly Lock ring. Price Realised: £123.50 The bag remains undeniably iconic, no matter which size you pick, it’s immediately recognisable as a Kelly. The choices for the Hermès admirer are the type of leather, style of stitching, size, colour and hardware. A newer addition to the Kelly family is the Kelly Pochette. Part of John Paul Gaultier’s first collection for Hermès in 2004, it is known as the original Mini Kelly. Envisioned as a compact iteration of the Kelly bag, this petite piece exudes timeless elegance with its compact yet functional design. Since its launch in the early 2000s, it has been a highly sought-after piece for collectors but was not classed as a quota bag until recently.  In line with the rest of the Kelly range, the Pochette includes the same features such as the straps and turn lock closure. Unlike the Mini Kelly, the Pochette cannot be converted into a shoulder bag, it is a clutch. However, it can (importantly) fit most standard-size mobile phones, something you might struggle with in a Mini Kelly 20. The top handle has some flexibility so you can hold it by the handle or put your hand through as a typical clutch.   This new imagining of a familiar style allows Hermès to increase its range while staying true to the stylistic legacy of the brand.   Magic in the Details: Stitching and Leather The style of stitching is denoted by Sellier or Retourne. Sellier translates to saddle and refers to the style being the most like the original. The Sellier has a rigid structure, with defined corners and visible stitching.  Retourne, in this instance, translates to turn out. The artisans start off in the same way as the Sellier but then turn the bag inside out. This gives a Retourne softer corners and piping rather than stitching. Some leathers suit certain styles better than others. Clemence is very soft and slightly heavier than the more commonly used Togo. This means that the leather can soften and stretch with age, giving it a slouchier and more casual appearance, which works well with the style of the Retourne. Whereas Chèvre is very lightweight and suits the more structured style of the Sellier. Kellys made from Chèvre are very popular and can be considered exotic skin. The rise in popularity is mostly due to the fashion for the mini Kellys being created in Chèvre. Due to its heavily textured grain, it is a leather that is more forgiving of scratches and marks. Due to the bag’s fine craft process and popularity, the Kelly bag is a highly exclusive purchase. It takes many years for loyal Hermès customers to have the opportunity to purchase one of these bags. One way for a savvy shopper to avoid this wait is to shop at auction. Hermès Kelly Bags at Auction Lot 168 Hermès – Swift Noir Kelly Pochette. Hermés Scarves The now iconic Hermés carrés (meaning ‘square scarves’), first went into production exactly a century after Thierry Hermés opened doors to what is now one of the most prominent luxury fashion houses on the planet. Robert Dumas, a family member, created the must-have accessory using a woodblock and silk stronger than anything else available on the market – making it the most versatile and sought-after accessory amongst the Parisian high society. Whether tied to a saddle, around the neck or as Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco did in 1957, used as an arm sling, the intricate and colourful designs quickly cemented its place as an elevated wardrobe staple. The creation process lives up to the thorough and meticulous reputation of the house, as each pattern takes over a year to finalise. Only releasing 12 designs per year, each motif can be traced back to the year of production and artist. This plays a key role in identifying whether your Hermés scarf is genuine, here are some factors you should be looking out for:
  • Artist signature on every piece (sometimes subtle and hard, or fun, to find!)
  • Hermés logo, and a copyright circled ‘c’.
  • Hand-rolled hems – always facing upwards.
  • Exact colour match with the thread.
  • Clear and vibrant colouring.
Hermés Scarves at Auction With each pattern telling a story, here are some from our February 20th Handbags and Accessory sale: Lot 179 Hermès – ‘Regina’ silk scarf. Estimate: £150 – £200 Meaning ‘Queen’ in Latin, this design was first introduced in 1972 and inspired by our Royal Queen Elizabeth II. Depicting an exquisite bouquet of wildflowers, it was later re-issued in 2002 to celebrate and honour the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Lot 184 Hermès – ‘Cosmos’ silk scarf. Price Realised: £84.50 Phillipe Ledoux is widely referred to as a legend when it comes to Hermés. His impact on the brand was huge, having created some of the most collected carrés to this day, ‘Cosmos’ being one of them! He was enlisted by Dumas himself, and his illustrations can be enjoyed in 90 scarves created throughout his career. Valuations Our valuations are free, with no obligation to sell with us. A Potted History of Christian Dior Costume Jewellery Founding Years (1946 – 1957) Christian Dior was a big believer in jewellery being an integral part of a complete outfit. With the “New Look” collection in 1947, Dior has been credited with redefining women’s fashion in the post-war period. He considered the entire outfit within his couture collections, and jewellery was an important component. Starting in the late 1940s, Dior started to design jewellery to go along with his couture collections. Jewellery to go along with the ready-to-wear collections soon followed. Jewellery from these early collections, such as “New Look”, which were designed by Christian Dior himself (or his early protegees) are highly sought after by collectors. Golden Age of Dior Costume Jewellery (1950s-1960s) The early days of Dior jewellery manufacturing are a who’s who of costume jewellery makers. Starting with Josette Gripoix, they also collaborated with Robert Goosens, Roger Jean-Pierre, Mitchell Maer, Scemama, Screiner and Kramer. Any pieces from this era are highly sought after by collectors and we have seen them realise extraordinary prices at auction. Matching sets or complete jewellery suites from this period are incredibly rare and collectable. Lot 648 Christian Dior – brooch by Mitchel Maer. Price Realised: £175.50 Perhaps the best-known Dior partner was the company Henkel & Grosse. More commonly referred to as just Grosse, they started working with Dior in 1955 and for the next fifty years were responsible for the production of Christian Dior Bijoux, along with their own ranges. Lot 186 Christian Dior – a pair of clip-on earrings. Price Realised: £312.00 The collaboration with Manfred Swarovski (grandson of Swarovski founder Daniel) in 1950 shone a light on both Swarovski and Dior jewellery. Christian Dior tasked Swarovski to create a crystal that reminded him of the mirrors and candelabra of the Palace of Versailles. With this brief in mind, Manfred Swarovski created the “Aurore Boréale”, a Swarovski crystal with an iridescent coating to mimic the rainbow or flashes of “fire” seen both in the reflections of the hall of mirrors and diamonds. The subsequent jewellery designed by Francis Winter for Dior followed the theme of Louis XVI’s decadence and replicated 18th-century parures. Lot 111 Christian Dior – a brooch with matching clip-on earrings. Price Realised: £1,300.00 When Christian Dior died in 1957, the fashion house he’d founded continued. With the likes of Yves Saint Laurent and Marc Bohan, the brand remained at the forefront of fashion jewellery. The creative directors continued to reflect Dior’s values and the jewellery released still often reflected the couture designs. Later Vintage and Contemporary Fashion Jewellery (1980s – 2000s) Moving towards the 80s and 90s, there was a shift towards incorporating the logo and recognisable motifs into the main design. Modern Christian Dior costume jewellery continues to embody the brand’s signature elegance, sophistication, and innovation while embracing contemporary design trends and materials. The motifs often directly reflect motifs found within their handbag designs as well as the couture collections and remain coveted by collectors. Lot 558 Dior – bangle. Mulberry is known for its desirable Designer handbags and luxury leather goods. Established in 1971 by Roger Saul, with the help of various family members including his sister Rosemary who designed the Mulberry logo. Rosemary was inspired by the trees Saul would pass every day on his way to school, she also wanted it to represent the idea of family and the growth of this English brand. One of the most recognisable Mulberry bags is the Mulberry Bayswater. Mulberry Bayswater The Mulberry Bayswater is now over 20 years old and remains one of Mulberry’s most popular styles, certainly proving itself to be a style with longevity.  Nicholas Knightly designed the soon-to-be ‘It bag’ in 2003. Knightly named the Bayswater after an area in West London, not far from Notting Hill – where the bag was rightfully recognised in 2004. Quickly the new bag became popular within the celebrity world. Kate Moss, Blake Lively, Meghan Markle and Sienna Miller were a few who styled this timeless classic shoulder bag, giving the Bayswater the attention it deserved. The Bayswater has stood the test of time and is still a popular bag, they do look as good or some say even better as they grow older. The style is perfect for everyday use, being such a convenient size and their exceptional leather quality, making it a bag that can be used for a lifetime and then passed on. Jane Birkin: an iconic name within the world of fashion. Effortlessly chic, Birkin epitomised the “this old thing?” attitude. So cool yet so casual, her French fringe, gapped teeth, and big blue eyes inspired one of the most influential designers to design his most influential bag. The Origins of the Birkin The story of how the iconic bag got its iconic name is particularly surprising. Jane had been upgraded on a flight to London and found herself sitting next to a man. He watched as she attempted to stuff her bag into the locker when everything fell out. He asked why she did not have a bag with pockets and she replied: “The day Hermès makes one with pockets I will have that”. Do you see where the story is going? The man was Jean-Louis Dumas – the chairman of Hermès between 1978-2006. Dumas had her draw a design for him which she scribbled on the back of the aeroplane sick bag. Bigger than the Kelly but smaller than a suitcase. In return for letting him use her name, Dumas gave Jane a Birkin bag. Birkin’s Birkin Bag Birkin bags have been popular since their conception. This is partly due to the fact they were especially exclusive. To buy a Birkin brand new, a client may be looking at tens of thousands of pounds, and months of waiting lists. It is no surprise then, that many owners of Birkin’s like to keep theirs in pristine condition, rarely leaving their dust covers, and being reserved for special occasions. Jane Birkin, on the other hand, stuck to her effortlessly chic style and her Birkin followed. Her personality shone through; her Birkin became stuffed full, like her, full of life. She once joked that it was her stuffed-to-the-brim bag that caused her muscle aches. To the handles, she attached necklaces and bracelets, beads spilling everywhere. Stickers and patches made an appearance. Charms that she collected on her travels, and trinkets. At one point she even added a Hermès watch. She said that, although she didn’t like wearing a watch, it was useful to know the time. Her bag became unique. She remained true to herself and styled her bag accordingly. Of course, it is a personal preference to how you want to keep your Birkin. There is nothing more classy and elegant than a perfectly maintained bag. But equally, if you want to customise your bag, we have some suggestions. Birkin Bags at Auction If you are in the market for a Birkin bag, an auction house like ours is a brilliant place to start. With a history dating back to the 1920s, the Chanel flap bag is iconic. Worn by princesses, actors, and women all over the world, the Chanel flap has never gone out of style. Its style is timeless, its silhouette is instantly recognisable, and its popularity is enduring. History of the Chanel Flap Bag Coco Chanel first conceived the idea of a handbag with an over-the-shoulder strap in the 1920s. The story goes that she became tired of holding her handbag in her hands and decided to design an alternative. Apparently inspired by soldiers’ packs, she used a long strap to hold the bag over the wearer’s shoulder. This was a game-changer for handbag design at the time as it allowed women to go “hands-free”. Despite creating this revolutionary design in the twenties, Chanel didn’t debut her flap bag until February 1955. It is from this date that the first model for the Chanel double flap gets its name – the 2.55. In 1982, Karl Lagerfeld joined Chanel as creative director and ushered in many changes to the Parisian fashion house. Notably, he spearheaded a redesign of the classic flap bag, creating the iconic interlocking CC twist lock. Since then, Chanel has continued to innovate new handbag designs constantly keeping the wearer’s needs in mind, whilst providing that signature Chanel flare in design. The Christmas party season is upon us, meaning it’s time to start planning your party outfits! And what party outfit is complete without the perfect handbag? A great party bag can perfect your entire look, we’ve asked our resident fashion icon (our HR manager!), Hira, to pick some of her favourites. Party Season Handbags When it comes to party season handbags, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First and foremost, you want something that’s practical. You’ll need to carry all your party essentials – phone, keys, lipstick – so make sure your bag is big enough to hold everything you need. If you like, you can check out our TikTok page where we frequently test if our bags fit everything you need! But practicality doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. This Christmas, statement bags are all the rage. Think bold colours, eye-catching prints, and unique shapes. A statement bag is the perfect way to add personality to your party look. Of course, classic styles are always in fashion too. A sleek clutch can be just as fantastic as a more daring design. And if you’re looking to add a touch of sparkle to your outfit, a beaded or sequined bag is the perfect way to do it. Here in the Fellows office, Hira never misses the opportunity to impress with her outfits, which is why we’ve looked to her to help us curate the perfect selection of party season handbags! How To Style Your Party Season Handbags Sometimes it can be overwhelming trying to put together a different outfit for each of your events, so we have picked a simple base that everyone should have – the humble black dress. When paired with these different bags and accessories you can see how dramatically different an outfit becomes. Red, gold, and green, are all stunning festival colours. These bags completely transform this dress. If you’re going for something classic, how about this red YSL crossbody? When paired with another pop of red the outfit really comes together. If you’re feeling adventurous – gold with animals, we’ve gone for tigers and snakes. Add some gold jewellery or, if you like, a Rolex from one of our watch auctions, and you will be sure to stun. Finally, a colourful take on a classic bag. This green Chanel adds a twist to an otherwise simple outfit. At Auction Lot 422 Yves Saint Laurent – Cassandre Envelope crossbody bag. The Lady Dior bag is highly recognised in fashion history, synonymous with luxury, elegance, and sophistication. It is famously associated with Princess Diana of Wales, who was a fashion icon during the 1990s. Consequently, her legacy lives on through this iconic piece. The History of Lady Dior This iconic bag was first introduced in 1994. Initially called the ‘Chouchou’, it was later renamed as a tribute to the fashion icon who was often seen carrying it. Princess Diana was the first to wear the bag during a visit to a Cezanne art exhibition in Paris in 1995. Shortly, she fell in love with it and was frequently pictured carrying it on various occasions. The design of the Lady Dior bag is undoubtedly timeless and elegant. The bag is made from a variety of high-quality materials. It also features the signature Dior letter charms that hang from the handles. Another key feature in leather variations of this bag is the Cannage stitching emblematic of the fashion house. This geometric technique was originally inspired by Napoleon III’s chairs which were used by Christian Dior for attendees of his shows. Over time, the bag has undergone subtle design modifications. However, its signature attributes, such as the Dior charms and top-handle style, have remained consistent, while the bag is available in varying shapes and sizes.
