Glycine Combat Sub – A Lot of Watch for the Money

All

More and more people are realising that buying a watch at auction represents good value for money. Avoiding the initial VAT and the first hit of depreciation can allow you to wear the watch of your dreams that little bit quicker.

Occasionally a brand comes in for auction that is great value, whether new or pre-owned. This Glycine Combat Sub is such a watch…

Glycine is developing a growing following and respect but they are not a newcomer, having been in business in Switzerland since 1913. The war years saw them supplying their watches to the German army and they have always maintained a strong following in Germany to this day. The 1950s saw the launch of their iconic ‘Airman’ a 24hr watch with a second time zone that has never been out of the collection since.

The Watch we see here is the latest offering from the ‘Combat’ collection, originally launched in the early 1960s. This ‘Sub’ fulfils everything you could want from a dive watch. It houses a solid ETA 2824-2 automatic movement, has Super Luminova hand inserts and numerals and a solid-feeling bezel. The winding crown is slightly over-size, making it easy to operate and giving confidence when screwing it down.  The watch is a good 42mm wide but is surprisingly slim – making its non-dive life under a shirt cuff very comfortable. The solidity of its construction would be the envy of many brands costing three times the retail price.

The Glycine collection has clean line and a cool, contemporary utilitarian feel, (possibly explaining the German fan base) With a watch like this, in ‘as-new’ condition, the brand is sure to grow in popularity over here.
