With several auctions fast approaching, I thought it would be nice to pick 5 highlight watches. These are all lots that I particularly like and think deserve some extra attention. They vary in style and design so it will be interesting to see how they all do when they go under the hammer.
Highlight Watches: Number 1
A real classic style of watch from one of the most renowned watchmakers in the world. Wearing a watch like this is like wearing a piece of history. Thanks to the hallmarks, we know the case was made in 1928 – just imagine the events that this watch has seen! The overall aesthetic of the watch is really clean and classy, with highly visible numerals and nice knurling to the bezel and case back. In for a really attractive price, with estimates of £180-260, it's hard to go wrong.
Highlight Watches: Number 2
Haven’t you heard? Vintage is in. But if you want vintage looks with the reliability of a modern quartz watch, look no further. Riffing on the looks of the 70s Breitling Surfboards, this Bulova is well built, looks the part and, realistically, keeps better time than any watch from the 70s ever will! With an estimate of £100-150, considering the near-immaculate condition of the watch, this Bulova would be great for any collection!
Highlight Watches: Number 3
Another modern take on a vintage look, I find this tank-shaped watch attractive. The overall design of it is great, but for me, it’s the numerals that are the standout feature. Not just a dress watch, it feels as though it could be worn in almost any situation. Don’t just take my word for it, Indiana Jones himself wore a version of this watch in the most recent film!
Highlight Watches: Number 4
The dial on this watch stands out to me, the alternating numerals and red stone hour markers draws me to the watch. A good size at 35mm, the watch is versatile and could be worn for a number of occasions. It is interesting to me that this watch is in a steel case, most of the other examples that I could find with this dial were fitted into gold cases, so this is something of a rarity. The lugs on the case are very attractive too, making this watch a really good proposition.
Highlight Watches: Number 5
I’m not normally much of a pocket watch guy, but this one has caught my eye. Art-Deco in style, with an interesting, squared, case featuring lovely green enamelling. The Breguet-style numerals on the dial really contribute to the overall look, making this watch a real eye-catcher and a great addition to any collection. It is guaranteed to stand out!
Special Mentions
Lot 140 – Just look at that dial! Gorgeous.
Lot 178 – A Chronograph Suisse chronograph. A classic style of watch, with a yellow metal outer case over a base metal inner core, providing a great look with value for money. A really lovely dial that is beginning to show its age.
Lot 224 – A lovely Leonidas chronograph. The plating on the case may have seen better days, but the dial, and the numerals in particular, are nice.
If you are looking for some new straps for your watches, but don’t want to pay the eye-watering retail prices that some brands charge, definitely take a look at the second day of this sale. It is packed with new and lightly used straps and parts from some of the top brands in watchmaking!
