Lot 169

Full Lot Description

A F2 Grand Prix silver trophy, the bellied body with alternating acanthus leaf band and ornately scrolled double-handles, rising to flared upper body with armorial decoration, engraved to spread base 'GRAN PREMIO CIUDAD DE BOGOTA' 'ALCALDIA MAYOR DE BOGOTA FEB.14 DE 1971'. Stamped '0.900' to base. Height 32.5cm, diameter of rim 28cm. Weight 70.5ozt (2504.7g).

This trophy was likely awarded to Alan Rollinson, for his first-place win within the second race of Formula 2's 1971 mini-championships in Columbia. 1971 was the first and only F2 event held in Columbia, and was chosen to garner positive, international attention after the deaths of several sportsmen the previous year. The high altitude of the Ricardo Mejía circuit, built for the event, leading to machine issues, was one of several factors that condemned Columbia as a future F2 host.

Rollinson raced against renowned motor sportsmen, two time Formula 1 champion Graham Hill and Le Mans 24 hours five times winner Derek Hill, who came third place. His triumph in the Bogota race is in contrast to his fifteenth-place ranking in the edition's first race.

  • Item shows general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing.
  • Recesses to decoration show some polish residue.
  • Interior is darkly tarnished and dirty, with a few deeper dints.
  • Upper section wobbles slightly when pressure is applied to handles.
  • Inscription to base is slightly worn, but still legible.
  • Back of upper, flared body, twin opposed to armorial, appears quite bumpy and uneven.
  • Top of bellied lower body shows some small but deep nicks and dints, especially to back.
  • Silver gauge is quite thick.
  • 'GRAN PREMIO CIUDAD DE BOGOTA' inscription to back of base is not in exact alignment to 'ALCALDIA MAYOR DE BOGOTA FEB.14 DE 1971' to front, which is also not directly aligned to central armorial to bowl.
  • Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
