Alan Gard
Alan Gard, a renowned British jewellery designer, established his legacy in the 1960s with a distinctive approach to sculptural jewellery. Apprenticing at Crombie’s of Bond Street and working under Andrew Grima, Gard founded his own jewellery business in 1964. Known for his tactile, abstract designs, Gard often used 18ct yellow gold and unpolished coloured gemstones, focusing on raw, natural forms. His minimalist use of diamonds added subtle accents to his creations. A key figure in the British jewellery renaissance, Gard challenged traditional design norms, experimenting with bold sculptural forms and innovative goldsmithing techniques. His work gained royal recognition, with pieces such as his Lilypad brooch, once owned by Princess Margaret, fetching impressive auction prices. Gard's legacy continues through his exceptional craftsmanship, with notable commissions, including a replica of the Imperial State Crown for Jeffrey Archer's novel. Alan Gard’s contribution to jewellery design, particularly his mid-century abstract pieces, solidified his place as a master of the craft.
