Lot Description

A pair of late Victorian peppers, with pierced lid, part fluted and embossed scroll and floral decoration to the body, hallmarked London 1897. Height approximately 2 1/2 inches (6 1/2 cm), also to include a late Victorian salt dish with accompanying spoon, both hallmarked Stokes & Ireland Ltd, Chester 1896. Gross weight 4.23 ozt (131.56 grams).

The salt dish and spoon are very tarnished, the inside of the dish and the bowl of the spoon are completely black with tarnish. The solder join is visible on the salt dish. The hallmarks on both the spoon and dish are rubbed but legible. The base of the dish is stamped RP? 254337. The dish sits flat on the table. The salt dish sits slightly to one side, possibly as made. The peppers are tarnished, particularly with patches of tarnish to the bases, there are gathered areas of tarnish in the detailing. One of the peppers has thinned around the neck at the top of the embossed decoration and has a small split where it has worn through, approximately about 3mm long. The hallmarks are rubbed but just legible. There is one small noticeable dint to one of the peppers.
