Lot 2

Lot Description

A matched set of three George III silver open salts, each of oval form with gadrooning to rim, foliate and scroll pierced sides with small, central engraved crest, the whole with blue glass liner and standing on four claw and ball feet.  Hallmarked Henry Tudor & Thomas Leader, Sheffield (mark registered 1773-1793 approximately), no date letter but with second crown mark.  Maximum length measures 3 1/4 inches (8cm), gross combined weight 4.3 ozt (136.4 grams).

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

All three salts display general wear and surface marks and scratches commensurate with the age and use.  There are also various nicks, dints and pin prick marks in the metal, especially to the pierced sides.  Some of the seam lines are visible, particularly on the feet.  The engraved decoration on the crests is quite worn.  On two of the salts, there are various holes to the underside of the feet.  The feet on the third salt are slightly different, so perhaps it is best described as a pair of open salts and a single salt.  Hallmarks are rubbed but are all still legible, they consist of lion passant, crown mark, a smaller crown mark and the maker's mark.  There is no date letter.  The blue glass liners are generally okay with minor rim nicks.
