Lot 49

Lot Description

A matched pair of silver Art Nouveau candlesticks, each with cylindrical stem embossed with flowers and leaves and with conforming decoration to the spreading square base (filled), with detachable nozzle.  Hallmarked William Comyns & Sons Ltd., London 1903 and 1906, also with registration number 415205.  Height measures 6 1/4 inches (16cm).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

Both candlesticks display wear commensurate with the age and use.  Both have surface marks and scratches and also various dints in the metal.  The embossed flower and leaf decoration is generally okay on both but there is some loss of detail to the decoration around the base of the stem.  The candlestick dated 1906 does have some quite large dints to the cylindrical stem and the seam line is just about visible.  The detachable sconce is a little misshapen around the rim and there are some contact marks.  There are various other small nicks and dints, especially around the base, and a larger dent to one of the corners.  The candlestick dated 1903 is in similar condition, although there are not as many dints to the stem.  Again the seam line is just about visible.  There are various nicks and dints around the base and also a possible repair to one side.  The hallmarks and part hallmarks on both are a little rubbed but still clear and legible.
