Lot Description

Scottish Victorian silver mounted freedom casket for the Royal Burgh of Falkland Fife, the waisted body vertically fluted with ornate acanthus leaf mounted paw feet, the hinged lid with scalework border and surmounted with a crest depiction of a resting stag below an oak tree and the motto 'Discite Justitiam Moniti Non Temnere Christum'.  Hallmarked Edinburgh 1894 and made by James Aitchison. The length measuring 10 inches (26 cm), width measuring 5 1/4 inches (13.5 cm).

The casket displays general scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Remnants of old polish to the recesses. The base has a number of convex dents. The interior of the lid has been gilded, the interior as a whole is quite discoloured. The interior of the body is lined with wood, this displays obvious signs of general wear. The hallmarks to the body and lid are clear and legible.
