The piece displays general wear and surface marks and scratches commensurate with the age and use.  There are remnants of polish in some areas and also a little bit of tarnishing.  It appears as though the cigar lighter wick is missing from the central removable section, also the hinge may have been soldered.  The wooden base of one of the compartments is loose and needs to be fixed back into place.  There is some wear and deterioration to the lining on the underside of the compendium.  The central section has two removable tools, possibly for pipe cleaning.  The writing on the lids reads 'William from Gilbert 1911'.  The whole piece is struck with full sets and part sets of hallmarks in several places and all are still legible.
