Lot 648

Lot Description

A good 18th century brass winged lantern clock with alarm by S. Tompson, London. Having a 6.25" Roman dial inscribed as above, with inner single-hand track and cruciform half-hour divisions, framing engraved foliage and central Arabic alarm dial, the verge-and-crownwheel escapement with outside countwheel strike, flanking an anchor pendulum, the case having a strapped bell surmount with internal double-headed hammer, between urn finials and addorsed dolphin crestings, the 'gun barrel' pillars framing pinned side doors each with scroll-topped box wings with open front allowing full and visible pendulum swing, raised on ball feet, steel rods to the rear for wall mounting, 14.5", (37cm) high.

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

Dial - general superficial scratching and light tarnishing. Light wear to wax numerals.

Movement - shows no obvious signs of alterations internally, but could have had a full-depth verge rod with pendulum running down back of case rather than internally - this would mean that the wings were added. Case appears otherwise basically sound. Inspection in person is recommended.
