Lot 84

Lot Description

A pair of George III silver candlesticks, the tapered stems raised above circular bases, with detachable sockets and gadroon motif throughout, filled. Hallmarked Thomas & John Settle, Sheffield 1814. Height 9 1/4 inches (23.5cm).

Total lot weight: No

Both candlesticks display general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.  Deeper scratches to some areas and various minor surface nicks and dints.  Remnants of polish to some areas.  Both sticks display some dints and knocks around the rim of each socket, and on one of them there is a more considerable knock.  Both the detachable nozzles are a little misshapen around the rims at the base of the column.  On both sticks there is a small gap appearing around the base, between the silver edge and the filled section.  The full hallmarks are situated around the base of each stick and also on each detachable nozzle.  All appear a little rubbed but still legible.
