Lot 45

Lot Description

A 19th century Meissen-type porcelain figure group of Diana and Actaeon, she modelled semi-naked with star-decorated yellow cloak, recumbent in a chariot, he with bare torso, a spear at his feet, Cupid hold aloft a flower basket beneath, a hunting dog at her feet, the naturalistic rocky base with gilt and puce scroll-moulded apron, underglaze blue crossed batons beneath, 12.25" (31cm) high.
In Greek legend, the hunter Actaeon stumbled upon the goddess Diana bathing, and as a punishment she turned him into a stag, he was then pursued by his own hounds to his death.
