Lot Description
An early Victorian oak-cased ebonised octant. (William) "Endersbee & Son, 335 Wapping, London". Having a brass vernier arm, the 11-inch frame with ivory scale divided to 95º, the T-shaped index arm signed as per title, pin-hole sights, interchangeable shades, index and horizon mirrors, etc., on brass feet, in fitted oak case with stepped hinged cover.
Literature: see Clifton, Gloria, Dictionary of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851, NMM 1996, p. 96, where this maker is listed working 1828-43, and at this address 1839-40.
