Lot 286

Lot Description

A tinplate magic lantern lecturer's lamp. Similar to the 'Bell' lamp by W. Butcher & Sons or the Spiers & Ponds 'Signal' lamp, the japanned body with mushroom vent over angled shade, brass signal arm concealing red glass window, and a bell on spreading square foot, 11.75", (30cm) high, together with a copper miniature lamp 'MOTO SAILS WEYMOUTH' and a candlestick with shade, (3).
See the Museum of Victoria, Australia for a similar Spiers & Ponds example, circa 1890. These lamps were used during slide talks to signal 'next slide' with a flash of the red light or by sounding the bell, whilst the shade gave light for reading notes.
