Lot Description

D.S.O. and Great War Group to Reverend Basil Aston, Temporary Chaplain to the Forces, 4th Class, comprising George V Distinguished Service Order, in original case, 1914-15 Star named to 'Rev. B. Aston. A.C.D.', British War Medal 1914-20 and Victory Medal with M.I.D. Oak Leaf, both named to 'Rev. B. Aston.', together with miniatures.


Reverend Basil Aston, Temporary Chaplain to the Forces, 4th Class, attd. 36th Inf. Bde., Ovillers, 7th - 8th July 1916, listed in the London Gazette with a good 'fighting' citation on the 25th August 1916 ‘For conspicuous gallantry during operations. For two days and a night he worked incessantly tending and clearing the wounded under shell fire. During the night, after he had been working twelve hours, he helped to carry a wounded man to the dressing station through trenches blown in and knee-deep in mud. He then immediately went back to rescue others.’
