Lot Description

A Victorian silver open salt of compressed circular form with a wide applied rim embossed with leaf and shell motifs, lobed decoration to the main body surrounding a shield cartouche depicting a lion seated above the Roman numerals LVIII, the whole raised above three foliate capped hairy paw feet.  Hallmarked London, date letter illegible, maker's mark probably for Benjamin Smith III (1838-1848).  Height measures 2 1/8 inches (5.5 cm), weight 6.79 ozt (211.2 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The item displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.  Heavier tarnishing to the interior and there appear to be remnants of ash.  Knocks to the applied rim and it is a little out of shape, also some cracks along the join and possible repairs as large areas of solder are visible to the underside.  Some minor dints/bumps to main body.  Engraved lion and numerals are quite worn and faint.  There is a crack around the join of one of the feet.  Maker's mark is illegible.  Rubbing to other hallmarks but they are still legible.
