Lot 30

Lot Description

A Victorian silver open work sugar basket, of circular tapering form with foliate scroll pierced sides and small crest engraving, with swing handle and standing on four scrolled feet (liner deficient).  Hallmarked Cartwright & Woodward, Birmingham 1863.  Height measures 3 5/8 inches (9.2 cm), weight 5.81 ozt (180.6 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The basket displays general surface scratches, marks and wear commensurate with the age and use.  Quite heavy tarnishing is visible throughout and it would benefit from a clean and polish.  Deeper scratches and nicks to some areas.  Possible solder repair around one of the feet.  A few slight dints and breaks in the pierced sides, also small solder repairs or small sections missing.  One of the feet has been knocked and is now leaning inwards.  Swing handle is a little loose and does not stay in the upright position.  Maker's mark a little rubbed but otherwise the hallmarks are clear and legible.
