Lot 74

Lot Description

A late Victorian silver teapot, the oblong bellied form having a gadroon rim, lobed decoration and a stained wood handle and finial, hallmarked Birmingham 1898, other marks worn. Together with a matched mid-twentieth century silver cream jug and twin-handled sugar bowl, hallmarked John Rose, Birmingham 1953. Total gross weight 36.47 ozt (1134.2 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Total lot weight: No

All three pieces display general wear, surface scratches, marks and tarnishing commensurate with general use. Some minor dints and floods of solder visible along seam lines. Also some heavier scratches and nicks. Hinged teapot lid appears in good condition. Slight splits to the tip of the spout. Some fading to staining on the wood handle and finial. On all three pieces, it appears as though some kind of liquid or substance has been used on the hallmarks. The hallmarks on the later pieces are still clearly legible, however this has caused more damage to the hallmarks on the teapot as there also appear to be some heavy scratched or scrubbed marks. The lion passant is partly worn and the maker's mark has completely worn away. The other two marks are still visible.
