Lot 1186

Lot Description

An interesting folio of pressed seaweed specimens attributable to the notable Victorian figure John Ruskin, (1819-1900).

Comprising a loose folio of samples, each on 5.75" x 4.25" sheets with blank divisions, one glazed, approximately 82 in all, unannotated, but with accompanying note on matching card (probably a board to the album and of matching size) "Sea-weeds gathered on the Barmouth beach in July 1865", in a hand consistent with handwriting seen in Ruskin's letters.

Sold with an accompanying map, labelled to the blue card sleeve 'Panorama prise au Sommet du Mont Rigi par Henry Keller, Zurich *ez l'Auteur, Untre Zaune N. 367', with bookplate verso 'EX LIBRIS JOHN RUSKIN BRANTWOOD', comparable to other known bookplates of Ruskin, containing an engraved folded panorama of 'Righi-Kulm' 1802, the card pouch 6" x 4.5", (15cm x 11.5cm).

Provenance: Formerly the property of Mrs Doris Scott who used to live in Coniston village (near Brantwood). Mrs Scott worked as a Clerk for a local Antiques dealer and acquired this book through her work there.

Notes: The contents of this lot appear consistent with probable ownership by Ruskin. He is recorded as having ascended Mount Rigi in 1841, capturing several sketches. In addition, he was a life-long preserver of natural specimens including ferns (on which he wrote and published), and championed the Victorian revival of a Georgian hobby, namely the preservation and display of such samples in frames, and the decoration and utilising of the same in 'spatter-work' collages.

Finally, John Ruskin was a known regular visitor to Barmouth, establishing the 'Guild of St. George' there in 1871, taking on thirteen cottages and renting them out at fixed low levels on a philanthropic basis to assist members of the community in avoiding poverty. This is well-recorded in Blanche Atkinson's essay "Ruskin's Social Experiment at Barmouth".
