Lot 396

Lot Description

A small nineteenth century Dutch silver box, the shaped circular form with hinged lid and stipple punched borders enclosing a bird motif. Dutch assay marks including lion passant and date letter for 1870. Diameter measuring 5 cm, weight 22.3 grams.

Postage: Postable

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The box is heavily tarnished, especially to the interior, which is nearly black. Quite a worn appearance overall with many surface marks, scratches and little dints. Surface repair to wing of bird. Further likely repairs around hinge. Possible surface erosion to interior as there is a shiny circular patch, which has a pitted appearance. When the lid is closed there is a gap between the parts near to hinge and a slight overlap in other areas. There is a further twice struck indistinct mark in addition to the other Dutch marks.
