Lot Description
A George III provincial silver tankard, the plain baluster form having girdle detail and a domed, hinged lid with gadroon style border and pierced thumb-piece to a scroll handle with heart shape terminal, with scratch initials to the handle 'S' over 'R I' and the whole raised on a spread circular foot with conforming gadroon border. Hallmarked John Mitchison, Newcastle 1784. Maximum height including thumb-piece measuring 8 1/4 inches (21 cm), weight 27.79 ozt (864.3 grams).

Condition Report
The tankard appears in good overall condition, displaying some general tarnishing and surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with the age and general use. Surface nicks, minor dints and bumps and also pitting or pin prick marks throughout. The decoration on the girdle is now very rubbed and worn. Hinged lid appears in good working order. Slight crack visible to one side of the handle. Floods of solder around the flange to the interior of the lid, also a couple of gouges and areas of pitting around the hinge. Main hallmarks are located to the underside and these are clear and legible. Further maker's mark to handle and flange of lid and also lion passant struck to top of lid.
