Lot Description

An early 20th century silver diamond and synthetic ruby brooch. Of openwork design, the old-cut diamond, suspended from a rose-cut diamond and calibre-cut synthetic ruby surround, with pearl and rose-cut diamond detail. Estimated old-cut diamond weight 0.25ct. Length 4.9cms. Weight 6.5gms. Pearl untested.

<li>Overall condition fair to good. Surface scratches and discolouration in keeping with general age and wear.

<li>Several synthetic rubies and rose-cut diamonds are missing. Some stones are replacements.

<li>Some metalwork is bent slightly out of shape.

<li>Diamonds well matched.

<li>Diamonds bright.<p>

<li>Cut and setting of rose-cut diamonds prevents total carat weight estimation.

<li>Individual size and setting of diamonds prevents accurate colour and clarity assessment.<p>

<li>Old-cut diamond with small surface cavity to one side of the crown and some minor inclusions under 10x magnification.

<li>Synthetic rubies are a medium pinkish red hue, fairly well saturated, with good clarity and typical inclusions.<p>

<li>Synthetic rubies are in good condition with minor nibbles to the facet edges.<p>

<li>Pearl has not been tested for natural origin.

<li>Pearl is a creamy white hue, with iridescent overtones and typical surface blemishes.

<li>Metal electronically tests as primarily silver, with some sections of low carat gold to the reverse.

<li>Fellows uses a Thermo Scientific Nitron Handheld XRF Analyser to test metals. This technology is limited to examining metal to a depth of approximately 8 microns.

<li>Fellows does not guarantee the standard of gold or platinum unless an item is hallmarked. Results from electronically tested items should only be used as a guide and with caution, as false readings are possible.
