Lot Description
A George I Britannia silver tankard, of slightly tapering cylindrical form with armorial engraving to front, above a moulded girdle to a skirted base, the domed and hinged lid with scrolled thumb-piece to a scroll handle with scratch engraved initials 'H' over 'I M'. Hallmarked London 1717, maker's mark probably for Seth Lofthouse. Maximum height to thumb-piece measuring 6 7/8 inches (17.5 cm), weight 20.49 ozt (637.2 grams). </p>
<li>The arms are for Ralph HUTCHINSON (born 1740) the son and heir of Ralph RICHARDSON (1700-70) of Richmond who in 1736 married Martha ELLA (1718-85) the daughter and heiress of William ELLA (1686-1731) of Thirsk by Martha NAYLOR (1699-1721) who in turn was the daughter and heiress of Thomas NAYLOR mercer of York and Elizabeth nee NORFOLK. Ralph RICHARDSON (born 1740) married, in 1762 at York, Elizabeth HUTCHINSON of the same descent. The couple had no issue. The HUTCHINSON family were found earlier at Bishopwearmouth County Durham and before that at their place of origin in Cumberland. <p>
<li>The armorial is slightly later engraved, as the earliest it could have been created would be 1762, when the marriage of Ralph HUTCHINSON and Elizabeth HUTCHINSON took place at York, therefore a few years after the assay date of 1717. <p>

Condition Report
Appears in good overall condition considering the age of the tankard. Tarnished throughout and would benefit from a clean and polish. Displaying general surface wear, marks and scratches throughout commensurate with the general use and age of the piece. Numerous surface nicks and some heavier scratches. A few surface dints and bruises throughout. There is some sideways movement to the hinges of lid but it is still in working order, although there is a likely repair at the join of the thumb-piece to the lid as there are some cracks and impressions in the metal and flood of solder visible to the interior of the lid in the same area. Further possible repair at the join of the base of the handle to the main body. Hallmarks located just below the rim with heavy impressions visible to the interior of the tankard. Further matching hallmarks to the domed top of the lid and a maker's mark repeated to handle. Some rubbing and partial distortion to marks but all still legible.
