Full Lot Description
A Victorian 5th Bucks Volunteer Corps silver bugle, having scrolled, decorative band to bell and panel to handle, engraved to the upper tube 'Presented by Lady Mary Taunton to The Bucks Volunteer Corps 1862', with red and black rope and tassels tied to tuning slide. Hallmarked London 1862. Length 30.2cm, gross weight 19.8ozt (617.6g).
Lady Mary Mathilda Georgiana Taunton nee Howard (1823-1892) was the daughter of 6th Earl of Carlisle and Lady Georgina Cavendish. Her maternal grandmother was the infamous socialite and political organiser Lady Georgina Spencer, Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806). In 1852, Lady Mary Howard married Henry Labouchere, 1st Baron Taunton. Around 1860, the 5th Bucks Corps was formed under Captain R. Bateson-Harvey. The raising of numerous volunteer corps during this period was a response to the threat of invasion by France, while England's militia was ill prepared.
