Lot 283

Full Lot Description

A 9ct gold Irvin Caterpillar club pin awarded to FO H.L Garriock, length 1.9cm, 0.96g

Believed to have been awarded to Flying Officer Henry Lloyd Garriock, Royal Canadian Airforce, 419 sqn, service no. J/19068. It was awarded for a jump on 16 December 1943. Whilst bombing Berlin in a Lancaster MK11 DS 762, the plane was hit by flak over Osnabruck, then involved in a night attack in which the fuel tanks were damaged and a fire started. The fire was successfully extinguished but they were left with insufficient fuel to get home after bombing Berlin. They headed for Sweden but were forced to abandon the plane in parachutes, the plane then crashed into Lake Asnen.

FO Garriock was killed in action on 15th March 1945. The Lancaster KB 870 he was aboard was attacked by friendly aircraft and exploded mid-air. Reports note that Garriock was killed, but that several of the crew were blown-out of the aircraft and descended by parachute. Garriock and the other soldiers that were killed in this crash were originally buried at Margraten and after the war were moved to Nederweert, both in the Netherlands.
