Full Lot Description
An Edwardian silver inkstand, of spreading rectangular form with canted corners, ogee outline and reeded border detail, the initial engraved and dated hinged lid opening to reveal two circular apertures (missing liners), hallmarked John Grinsell & Sons, Birmingham 1909, length of base 18cm, gross weight 14.5ozt (451g); together with a silver mounted square glass inkwell, the plain silver collar hallmarked George Nathan & Ridley Hayes, Chester 1911, measuring 6.5cm square. Condition Report
- Both displaying some general surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing consistent with their age and use
- Inkstand:
- With some slightly heavier wear around the edges and corners, and one corner in particular is lifting a little
- With some heavier scratches and minor surface nicks, most notably to the lid and base
- One fixing screw missing to the base
- Hinge pin sticking out slightly on one end; lid does not close completely flush and rises up again slightly so that there is a small gap when closed
- Missing ink pot liners inside
- Lid initial engraved and dated June 1911
- Hallmarks located to the front, base and inside lid, some minor rubbing but all still legible
- Numbered 2824
- Edge of base also stamped with retailer's 'REID & SONS. NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE'
- Glass inkwell:
- some minor nibbles and chips to the glass, mainly the corners
- some pitting marks to the top of the silver collar and a small patch of slight surface damage on one side
- Hallmarks appear a little rubbed, mostly the maker's mark, but all still legible
