Full Lot Description
Stainless steel case with tachymeter bezel. Automatic movement. Black dial with baton hour markers, subsidiary recorder dials to three and nine, and date aperture to six. On an unsigned partial white metal CART winners bracelet.
This watch was the property of the former motor-sport engineer John Baldwin and is sold by his family. John began his motorsport career at Lotus, before moving to the USA and becoming involved in Indycar. He later returned to the UK, working at McLaren, Ensign and Brabham, amongst others. He later moved to the United States and worked at a number of teams in senior positions. At Lotus John had involvement in the development of the Lotus 63, and the Lotus 72. During his time at Mclaren, he assisted in the designing of the MP4/1, the first carbon fibre monocoque chassis to race in Formula 1. He was the chief designer for numerous Indy cars, including the three time Indy 500 winner, the M16. John worked on cars driven by some legends of motorsport, including Jochen Rindt, Mario Andretti, Emmerson Fittapaldi, James Hunt, Alain Prost, and Niki Lauda. The remaining end links of the bracelet read 'Al Unser, 1970 National Champion' and 'Joe Leonard, 1971 National Champion', suggesting it may have been given as a reward to team members during his time at Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing.
