Full Lot Description

A pair of late George III silver sugar tongs, with stippled Greek Key pattern decoration and initial engraved, hallmarked Peter & William Bateman, London 1814, and a pair of William IV plain silver Fiddle pattern sugar tongs, hallmarked Joseph & Albert Savory, London 1835, length of both approximately 14.5cm; together with a smaller pair of floral decorated tongs with claw grips, appear unmarked, length 9cm. Gross weight 2.92ozt (91g).

  • All three pairs displaying some general surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing commensurate with their age and use
  • All with heavier patches of tarnishing to some areas
  • George III pair:
    • arms appear in fairly good alignment when pressed together
    • some heavier wear and minor nicks around the edges and tips of the bowl grips, but have generally faired ok
    • hallmarks a little rubbed, more heavily to the maker's mark, but still legible
  • William IV pair:
    • Arms slightly out of alignment when pressed together
    • Damage around the tips of the bowls, more so on one side
    • Likely repairs to the curved section, seen more inside
    • Hallmarks a little rubbed but all still clearly legible
  • Floral decorated tongs:
    • slightly out of alignment
    • some blackening and dried polish to some areas and crevices
    • appear unmarked but test around 93% Ag.
