The Birth of a Fashion Legacy

Fendi, one of Italy’s most iconic fashion houses, has a rich history that dates back to 1925. Edoardo and Adele Fendi opened the first boutique in Rome. The original store focused on high-quality leather goods and fur, a reflection of Italian craftsmanship at its finest. A second boutique opened in 1932, laying the foundation for what would become a global fashion house.

A Family Affair: The Fendi Sisters

In 1946, the founders’ five daughters, Paola, Anna, Franca, Carla, and Alda, joined the family business. Each sister brought her unique perspective and skillset, contributing to the brand’s expansion. Their influence marked the beginning of Fendi’s transformation into a true fashion house, moving beyond accessories to encompass a broader vision of style.

Karl Lagerfeld: The Visionary Behind Fendi's Reinvention

The next major chapter began in 1965 with the arrival of Karl Lagerfeld, who would go on to shape the brand for over five decades. As Fendi’s creative director for fur and women’s ready-to-wear, Lagerfeld revolutionised the way fur was used in fashion and introduced the now-iconic double "F" logo – standing for “Fun Fur.” This branding became instantly recognisable and synonymous with bold, forward-thinking luxury.

Pioneering Fashion: The Debut of the Baguette Bag

The company continued to expand into new markets, launch creative collaborations, and evolve with the changing fashion landscape. One of its most ground-breaking moments came in 1997 with the debut of the Baguette bag. This bag was designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi, daughter of Anna Fendi. With this design, Fendi made its mark not just as a fashion house, but as a cultural touchstone.

The LVMH Era: Expanding Fendi’s Reach

In 2000, the LVMH luxury group acquired the brand, helping to catapult its reach even further. Today, under the artistic direction of Kim Jones for womenswear and couture, and Delfina Delettrez Fendi for jewellery, the brand continues to honour its legacy while looking to the future.
