Founded in 1960 by Valentino Garavani in Rome, it is a renowned name in Italian fashion. Born in Voghera in 1932, Garavani studied fashion in Paris before opening his atelier on Via Condotti in Rome. His breakthrough came in 1962 with a successful collection at the Pitti Palace in Florence.

The Rise of Valentino

In the 1960s and 70s, the brand became a favourite of royals, socialites, and Hollywood icons, designing for Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, and Sophia Loren. In 1968, he created Kennedy’s wedding dress for her marriage to Aristotle Onassis, solidifying his status as a global fashion icon. His signature 'Valentino Red' became synonymous with Italian elegance.

The Legacy of Valentino

Known for blending modern sophistication with classic beauty, Valentino excelled in both ready-to-wear and couture. By the 1990s, the brand expanded into accessories, menswear, perfumes, and bridal wear. In 1998, it was sold to investment groups, but Garavani remained involved until his retirement in 2008.

Iconic Valentino Designs and Signature Pieces

It has long been associated with iconic designs and recurring themes that define its brand. One of the most famous is 'Rosso Valentino', a bold red colour often seen in gowns, coats, and suits. The hue was inspired by a woman Garavani saw at the opera in Barcelona.

Pierpaolo Piccioli's Vision

Under creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, who took over in 2016, the company gained a modern edge, appealing to a younger audience while embracing diversity and cultural richness. His designs featured voluminous silhouettes, intricate embroidery, and vibrant colours, including neon brights. Piccioli also introduced the Rockstud line in 2010, featuring pyramid-shaped studs on shoes, bags, and accessories, adding an edgy touch to the brand's romantic style.

Valentino's Timeless Elegance

Also known for its dramatic cape dresses, evoking classical Roman style and symbolising power and grace. Through bold silhouettes, vibrant colours, and a focus on individuality, Valentino has redefined luxury fashion. Whether in couture or ready-to-wear, the brand continues to blend tradition and innovation, offering timeless elegance with a contemporary twist.
