Full Lot Description

A George III silver twin-handled pedestal tea urn, the ovoid body with later engraved armorial, detachable spool shape lid, foliate detailed handles, and bird head spigot, raised on a waisted socle to a shaped square base with foliate pierced apron and shell feet, with floral scroll engraving and gadroon borders throughout. Hallmarked Francis Crump, London 1772. Maximum height 54.5cm, gross weight 76.62ozt (2383.2g).

Ivory exemption submission reference: L5MCC86D

The arms are believed to be of James Arthur TAYLOR (1818-1889) of Strensham Court, Worcestershire, later of Lewes Cresent, Brighton, and his wife Maria Theresa RUSH (1817-1906). Their union in 1843 indicates that the urn was later engraved in the period 1843-1889.

James Arthur TAYLOR was the eldest son and heir of James TAYLOR (1783-1852) High Sherrif of Worcestershire, and Louisa née SKEYE (1795-1822). The family resided at Moseley Hall, which was sold to the Cadbury family after the death of the elder James TAYLOR.

After attending Winchester School and Trinity College Cambridge, James Arthur TAYLOR served as Conservative MP for East Worcestershire 1841-47.

  • Displaying general surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.
  • With some heavier tarnishing, dirt and polish residues to some areas.
  • With some minor surface nicks and dints.
  • Damage to one of the shell feet where a section has broken off and is not present.
  • Ivory key is loose.
  • The lid has several bashes or knocks around the inner rim; however it does still appear to be a fairly good fit to the main body.
  • Interior is heavily stained and appears blackened, also with dirt and other residues.
  • Hallmarks are located to inside neck rim, with further maker's mark and lion passant to the lid; these are a little rubbed in parts but are all still legible.
  • Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
