A mid-Victorian brass-bound walnut lap desk. The hinged rectangular cover centred by a brass cartouche within brass strapwork, corners and enclosing a gilt-edged skiver beneath pen tray and compartments, a secret compartment within, over conforming brass-inlaid front with escutcheon, 17.75" x 9.75" x 7" high, (45cm x 25cm x 18cm), sold with a receipt from the Newport Furniture Mart (W. J. & M. Lewis) dated 1919 for "1 Writing Desk £3-0-0" together with an oak cased cutlery set

Some superficial scratches to top. Tarnishing to brass lacquer. General light rubbing to skiver. Small veneer loss to one internal cover. One ink bottle missing. Has been repolished some years ago.
