An Anglo Indian ivory-inlaid hardwood box

An 18th century Anglo Indian ivory-inlaid hardwood box. Vizagapatam, the rectangular lid with ebony border framing a fine parquetry pattern of interlocking circles, four-pointed stars with dotted arms and lozenge centres, the underside with conforming spandrels and centre, the body with matching external decoration and embellished to the front with a pierced brass escutcheon and twisted handles with similar backplates, on a bombe plinth, 15" x 11.5" x 9" high, (38cm x 29cm x 23cm high), (internal alterations).

A box with matching decoration was sold by Anderson & Garland of Newcastle, 7th-10th December 2010, lot 1148. The handles and pierced backplates are based on European models of circa 1720.
