Lot 71

Lot Description

Victorian silver pair of open salts, each of quatrefoil form with decorative pierced rim above an embossed border of scrolling floral and foliate motifs with central vacant cartouche, the lower body with fluted border and conforming fluted pedestal foot.  Hallmarked London 1888, maker possibly Sibray, Hall & Co (Job Frank Hall). Maximum length measures 2 3/4 inches (7 cm), combined weight 3.4 ozt (106.2 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

Each salt displays general wear, tarnishing and surface marks and scratches commensurate with the age and use.  One of the salts is quite dinted and misshapen around the pierced rim and both wobble slightly when standing, one more than the other.  Other minor surface nicks and dints.  Interiors were probably once gilded but this is now very faded.  Remnants of polish in some areas.  Hallmarks are clear and legible, however the maker's marks are difficult to read as they are a little lost in the embossed decoration.
